History & Location

The Point is a private, gated, residential estate just 10 minutes drive from the town of Taupo. It sits on the lake edge, astride Whakamoenga Point. The Maori rock carvings traced into its western rock face are modern, but the area is steeped in history. Huge totara logs, relics of Taupo’s massive volcanic eruption around 186 AD, can be seen near the harbour entrance. Commanding a strategic position above the 20th century carvings is the historic Okutu Pa. On the southern side lies the Whakamoenga Cave, thought to have been used by Maori as early as the fourteenth cenury. Obsidian, lake and sea shells, pieces of gourd, and a moa bone found in an archaeological dig in the early 1960s now form part of a Taupo Museum exhibit. The waters around Whakamoenga Point are amongst the most pure of the Lake, yielding up many fat trout to both boat and fly fishers alike.

This is the land that The Top House creator Jack Gower’s grandfather acquired in 1935. The Point was the Gower family’s holiday spot for more than 50 years before changing times necessitated its subdivision. With their primary wish to maintain the area’s natural beauty, the family undertook a development that has preserved the tranquil character of Whakamoenga Point in perpetuity. The result is unique and really quite special.

To find us take State Highway 1 to Taupo from the north, turn off to Acacia Bay at the top of the hill before you descent into Taupo (Opposite Huka Falls Road). Once into Poihipi Road, turn left into Acacia Bay Road. If you miss the turning, just follow into Taupo, go around the roundabout at Woolworths and back over the river, turning first left up Norman Smith Street.

From the South, follow SH1 through Taupo over the Waikato River (Bridge) then first left into Norman Smith Street. Turn left into Acacia Bay Road.At the end of a long straight for some 3ks, passing shops on your left, where you will enter the “Acacia Bay” Community. Continue straight ahead passing Acacia Bay Rd on the left and Mapara Rd on the right. You should now be on Wakeman Road. Stay on this road passing a “no exit” sign on the left and re-entering into Acacia Bay Road again on the left, continue along this road for another 3ks which follows the lake shore line. Pass the “Road End” sign arriving at a stone pillar in front of two wooden gates. We will provide the current gate code once the booking has been confirmed
